ICS in the Community

When you hear the words Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean and Reverent, you immediately know the topic is about the Boy Scouts of America. Scouting has touched almost everyone’s life at one point or another. Today, it is a very important part of ICS senior programmer Kevin Hunter’s life. Kevin is in his first year as Cubmaster for Cub Scout Pack 153 Killen Church of Christ. He also serves as a Troop Committee Member for Troop 153 and a Committee Member for the Westmoreland District Committee which serves Lauderdale, Colbert, and Franklin counties. Kevin is the Webmaster for the Westmoreland District Committee, as well.

When asked about his work with the scouts, Kevin responded, "This is my first year as Cubmaster and we have 63 scouts and 19 registered leaders. Cub Scouts are for first grade to fifth grade boys with each age group separated into ranks and dens. This gives each scout a chance to "do their best" in age appropriate activities with other boys their age. One reason I volunteer for scouting is that Cub Scouts is a family oriented program."

Kevin summed his scouting service up by using his favorite quote by Elvis Presley:

"I figure all any kid needs is hope and the feeling he or she belongs. If I could do or say anything that would give some kid that feeling, I would believe I had contributed something to the world."

A mission statement of Boy Scouts is stated on the council's website (www.1bsa.org) and it reads as follows:

"It is the mission of the Boy Scouts of America to serve others by helping to instill values in young people and, in other ways, to prepare them to make ethical choices over their lifetime in achieving their full potential."

Building character and leadership into our young people today is a challenge and we thank Kevin Hunter and the Boy Scouts of America for providing them this opportunity.
